Health and Hygiene Information

What Are Cold Sores?

Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters that typically appear on or around the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and can be triggered by stress, illness, or sun exposure. Cold sores are widespread and can affect individuals of all ages.

Where Do Cold Sores Come from?

Cold sores are highly contagious and can be spread through close personal contact or by sharing items like utensils, towels, or lip balm. Once infected, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate periodically, leading to recurrent outbreaks.

Hygiene Rules to Prevent Cold Sores

  • Avoid close contact with others during an outbreak.
  • Do not share personal items that may have come into contact with the cold sore.
  • Wash hands frequently, especially after touching the affected area.
  • Keep the affected area clean and avoid picking at blisters to prevent secondary infections.

Following these hygiene practices can help reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others and minimize the likelihood of recurrent outbreaks.
