Macrobid [Furadantin] Capsules contain 100mg of the active ingredient, Nitrofurantoin (in the anhydrous and monohydrate form) and are supplied to pharmacists in blister packs of 14 capsules. The capsule also contains talc, corn starch, lactose, carbopol, povidone, sucrose and magnesium stearate. The capsule shell contains gelatin, sodium lauryl sulphate and colourings quinoline yellow (E104), titanium dioxide (E171) and FD and C Blue No. 2 (E132). The printing ink contains Shellac, Propylene Glycol (E1520), Titanium Dioxide (E171) and Black iron Oxide (E172)

Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial agent that is used to prevent and treat infections of the bladder, kidney and other parts of the urinary tract.

Do not take Macrobidand tell your doctor if:
- you have ever had an allergic reaction to Macrobid, any of its ingredients (listed above) or similar medicines such as Furadantin or Macrodantin;

- you have any disease of the kidneys;
- you are in labour or delivering your baby or breastfeeding;

- you have a problem with your blood sugar (diabetes mellitus);
- you have anaemia or lack an enzymes (body chemical) called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which causes your red blood cells to be more easily damaged (this is more common in black people and people of Mediterranean, Near Eastern or Asian origin);
- the concentration of your body salts needs adjustment (electrolyte imbalance) or you lack Vitamin B (particularly folate);
- you have any disease of lungs, liver or nervous system.
Can you use Macrobid [Furadantin] while you are taking other medicines?
Do not take Macrobidwithout talking to your doctor or pharmacist first if you are taking:
- Antacids (eg. magnesium trisilicate);
- Medicines for gout (eg. probenecid or sulfinpyrazone);
- Medicines for glaucoma: such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (eg. acetazolamide)
- these are mild ‘water tablets’ which are usually prescribed when the pressure in the eye ball is raised (glaucoma);
- Medicines which make the urine less acid (eg. potassium citrate mixture);
- Medicines for infections, known as quinolones.
Medical Checks
Your doctor will watch carefully for any effects on the liver, lungs, blood or nervous system.
Macrobidmay interfere with the results of some tests for glucose in the urine.
How to take your medicine

Adults and children over 12 years old:

- For treatment of bladder infections: One capsule twice a day for seven days.
- For prevention of bladder infections during surgery: One capsule twice a day on the day of the operation and three days thereafter.

If you take too much medicine contact your doctor or nearest casualty department. If you miss a dose do not double up, just continue as normal.

The most common side effects are minor and involve the digestive system.
Digestive system
Nausea (feeling sick), anorexia (loss of appetite), vomiting (being sick), stomach ache and diarrhoea.

Lungs

The nerves outside the spinal cord may react to Macrobid [Furadantin] producing headache, dizziness, extreme changes of mood or mental state, confusion, weakness, drowsiness, blurred vision, tingling, loss of feeling or loss of control of movement. These effects have been reported only very rarely, but they may be severe or in instances permanent.
Hypersensitivity
A variety of skin rashes or reactions have occurred in some patients.
This may appear as flaking skin, a red rash or fever accompanied by a rapid heart rate and severe rash with blistering. Other reactions may include inflammation of salivary glands (causing facial pains), pancreatitis (causing sever abdominal pain) and joint pains. If a severe reaction occurs, particularly if breathing or swallowing become difficult, contact a doctorimmediately.
Haematology
Blood cells have been affected in some patients. These effects may manifest themselves in several ways, such as bruising, delayed clotting, sore throat, fever, anaemia, a susceptibility to colds or persistent cold.
Other effects
Other rare side effects include short-term hair loss, raised pressure in the skull and urinary infection by organisms (germs) which are not sensitive to Macrobid.
While taking Macrobid [Furadantin] your urine may become coloured dark yellow or brown. This is quite normal and not a reason to stop taking the medicine.
Storing your medicine
