Retrovir (Zidovudine)

The active ingredient in Retrovir is zidovudine. Retrovir is a type of medicine known as an anti-retroviral. It belongs to a group of medicines called nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).

Resonium A (Sodium Polystyrene Sulphonate)

Resonium A is used to treat something called ‘hyperkalaemia’. This is when there is too much potassium in your blood. It works by removing this extra potassium to bring your levels back to normal. It is often given to people who have kidney problems and people on dialysis.

Piperacillin / Tazobactam

Piperacillin belongs to the group of medicines called broad spectrum penicillin antibiotics, which can kill many types of bacteria. Tazobactam prevents some bacteria from resisting the effects of piperacillin. This means that when piperacillin and tazobactam are given together, more types of bacteria are killed.

Pevaryl topical cream (Econazole nitrate)

The name of your medicine is Pevaryl topical cream. It is called ‘Pevaryl’ in this leaflet. Pevaryl contains a medicine called econazole nitrate. This belongs to a group of medicines called ‘antifungals’. Pevaryl is used for skin infections caused by fungi, yeasts and moulds.

Periostat – US: Vibramycin (Doxycycline) 20 mg film-coated tablets

Periostat (Vibramycin) belongs to a group of medicines called tetracyclines. Tetracyclines are a type of antibiotic although the very small dose of doxycycline contained in Periostat (Vibramycin) is not high enough for Periostat (Vibramycin) to act as an antibiotic. The standard treatment for periodontitis is a scaling and root planing carried out by your dentist or dental hygienist. Periostat (Vibramycin) is then prescribed by your dentist as an additional treatment.

Ovex (Mebendazole)

The active ingredient in Ovex (Vermox) is: Mebendazole 100 mg per tablet. Other ingredients are: Microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycollate, talc, maize starch, sodium saccharin, magnesium stearate, cottonseed oil -hydrogenated, orange flavour, colloidal anhydrous silica, sodium lauryl sulphate, orange yellow S (El 1 0).

Orelox Paediatric (Cefpodoxime Proxetil)

Orelox Paediatric 40mg/5ml Granules For Oral Suspension (called Orelox thoughout this leaflet) contains a medicine called cefpodoxime. This belongs to a group of antibiotics called ‘cephalosporins’.

Oraldene (Hexetidine)

The mouthwash contains hexetidine, which is an antibacterial and antifungal and is used to help treat throat and mouth infections, including mouth ulcers, thrush, sore or bleeding gums (called gingivitis), bad breath (halitosis) or sore throat. It can also be used before and after dental surgery to help prevent infections. This medicine is suitable for most people, but a few people should not use it. If you are in any doubt, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Occlusal cutaneous solution (Salicylic Acid)

Occlusal is used to treat and remove raised warts (usually found on the hands, elbows or knees) and verrucas (warts on the feet). Occlusal is a special solution which can be easily applied to the wart, dries quickly, needs no plasters and if used properly should cause minimal irritation. Warts, or verrucas as they are often called, are found most commonly on the hands, feet and knees. They are commonest amongst children of school age.

Nystan Oral Suspension (Nystatin)

The name of this medicine is Nystan Oral Suspension. This medicine contains nystatin as the active ingredient. Nystan Oral Suspension is used to prevent and treat fungal infections (thrush) of the mouth, throat or gut.
